These access keys have been chosen to follow the UK government accesskeys system guidelines where applicable, in order to support the adoption of a useful standard. Wherever possible, they also avoid conflicting with commonly-used screen reader keyboard shortcuts.

Structured, semantic markup: headings and navigation menus

  • HTML heading tags are used to convey document structure. H1 tags are used for main titles, H2 tags for subtitles, and so on.
  • Navigation menus are marked up as HTML lists. This ensures (for users of some screen readers) that the number of links in the list is read out at the start and it can be skipped easily.

Images

  • All content images used in this site include descriptive alt attributes.
  • Purely decorative graphics include empty alt attributes.

Font sizes

  • All text is styled utilizing relative font sizes, in em units.
  • You may change the font size of this document to your preference through your browser.

Visual Layout and Design

  • This site uses Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) to control layout and presentation.
  • If your browser or browsing device does not support stylesheets at all, the use of structured semantic markup ensures that the content of each page is still readable and clearly structured.
  • Several alternate stylesheets (including the W3C Core Styles and several based on them) are available for use, if your browser supports them.

Tables

  • Tables are not used for layout.
  • All tables have properly scoped header cells, to allow screen readers to render them intelligently. Where required, tables also have a summary.

Scripting

  • The site is accessible if scripting is disabled or unsupported.

Standards Compliance

Exception to current best practice: our XHTML is currently served as text/html rather than application/xhtml+xml
